PM: No reason to dissolve House, govt can hold power longer

BANGKOK, Jan 28 (TNA) - Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday reaffirmed that there is no reason to dissolve the House of Representatives following a disagreement between the coalition-leading Democrat Party and other coalition partners regarding the earlier plan to amend the Constitution, as he expressed confidence that the government can stay in office longer than March.

The premier made his assertion as the adviser to the leader of coalition partner Chart Thai Pattana Party Somsak Prissanananthakul submitted an open letter expressing his dissatisfaction over the resolution of the Democrat Party not to endorse the charter amendment motion to be lodged by the coalition parties.

Mr Abhisit said he never promised the coalition partners that he would amend the constitution regarding the electoral system, and that he is awaiting Social Action Party leader Suwit Khunkitti’s action to set a meeting of all coalition partners to discuss the issue.

The prime minister brushed aside concerns that the Democrat resolution will affect the stability of the coalition government.

"The situation in the first two or three months is tough, but there is still no sign of House dissolution," Mr Abhisit stated. "Disappointment and disagreement is normal but there is no reason to dissolve the House."

Mr Abhisit asserted that the Democrat Party will not review its decision if the coalition partners insist on lodging a charter amendment motion on two points; revise the voting system from multi-seat constituencies to single-seat, and the constitutional requirement that all international agreements must receive parliamentary approval.

The prime minister said he was informed that some organised violence may occur in the next few months as the court ruling on the assets seizure case involving former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on February 26 draws near, but said he was confident that his coalition government can last longer than March.

Meanwhile, the leader of coalition-partner Chart Thai Pattana Party Chumphon Silpa-archa reaffirmed that coalition partners will lodge a charter amendment motion to Parliament next week.

Mr Chumphon said that his party has forwarded the charter amendment draft to other coalition partners for consideration. If no revision is made, the motion will be submitted to House Speaker Chai Chidchob next week. (TNA)
