UNICEF calls attention to child rights

BANGKOK, January 14 (TNA) - To mark the National Children's Day 2012 in Thailand, which falls on January 14, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has called on all adults to promote and protect children's rights. When making the call, UNICEF Representative for Thailand Tomoo Hozumi said that people in the society should particularly pay attention to children and youths who are in poverty and at risk of being disadvantaged and vulnerable to abuse, negligence, exploitation and violence. Hozumi suggested that proper support from the grown-ups is the best gift for children on the occasion of the National Children's Day 2012, as it enables all children and youths to develop themselves to their full potential and abilities. Thailand has been a signatory of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) since 1992 and the Kingdom has made significant progress in guaranteeing child rights without discrimination even since. A Thai delegation, comprising senior officials from several ministries, will present a report on the country's progress in observing the international convention in Geneva, Switzerland, later this month, bringing with them two Thai children representatives from the central Ayutthaya and the southern Narathiwat Provinces to promote children's participation in the country's policy.
