About 100 Malaysian youths help rehabilitate flood victims

SAMUT SAKHON, December 18 (TNA) - About 100 Malaysian youths on Sunday helped in providing rehabilitation assistance to more than 800 households in a housing estate in Thailand’s central province of Samut Sakhon. The youths traveled from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur and had earlier assisted flood victims in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom and Ayutthaya provinces, had decided to give assistance to more than 800 households living in Zin Somboon housing estate before returning home. Senior officials of Krathum Baen district in Samut Sakhon along with people living in the housing estate joined hands with the Malaysian youths in cleaning their housing estate which was earlier inundated of about 1.5 metres and was the hardest hit area in the province as it also accommodated a temporary living centre for flood victims. A kindergarten school became a temporary shelter for 437 victims when the flood first hit the housing estate on November 1. However, the area is now almost dried with people returning to their home. But rehabilitation and cleaning are necessary as a large amount of garbage is left in the area. Malaysian youths also donated food and other necessities to people living in the housing estate before returning to their country. Meanwhile, First Army Region commander Lt. Gen. Udomdej Sritabutr led military officials, policemen, students and volunteers in cleaning and collecting garbage in Tawee Watana district on the outskirt of Bangkok after the area has dried. The district was under deep floodwater for about two months. About 50 army trucks helped in taking away mountains of garbage left in the area. (TNA)
