TURKISH PHOTO JOURNALIST OPENS EXHIBITION IN PARIS

PARIS (A.A) - 28.05.2010 - Renowned photo journalist of Turkey opened an exhibition in French capital of Paris on Friday.
Goksin Sipahioglu, one of the most distinguished and internationally renowned of creative photographers, opened an exhibition titled "Sipahioglu's Passions" including his photographs from several countries at Basia Embricos Gallery in Paris.
The exhibition will run till June 14.
Sipahioglu is also the founder of Sipa press, one of the world's most reputable photo press agencies.
Born in 1926 in the western province of Izmir, Sipahioglu graduated from Saint-Joseph Lycee and began journalistic studies at the University of Istanbul. He began his career as the editor of the Istanbul Ekspres in 1954. He founded the Yeni Gazete in 1957, anew daily printed with numerous photographs. As the general manager of the daily Vatan, he updated and modernized the Turkish press when he established the early-edition system and accelerated the newspaper printing process. Sipahioglu became the Paris correspondent of the Turkish daily Hurriyet in 1966; his photographs were published in leading French agencies such as Dalmas, Reporters Associés, Gamma and American agencies such as Black Star.
His photographs depicting the May 1968 student-worker riots in France were published in Jean Bertolino's book "Les Trublions" a year later. Sipahioglu joined the Gamma agency that year.
In 1994, France honored him with the badge of "Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" [Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters]. In November 1998, he opened a solo exhibition entitled "Un Regard sur les Barricades" [A View of the Barricades] at the "Mois de la Photo 98" exhibition in Paris where he exhibited the photographs of May 1968 student-worker riots in France. On 7th April, 2000 Sipahioglu was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Service to the State from the President of the Republic of Turkey. In September 2004 he was awarded the decoration of "Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" [Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters] by the French Minister of Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. In 2006, French President Jacques Chirac honored him with the rank of "Chevalier dans l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur" [Knight in the Order of the Légion d’Honneur].
