Tehran-Caracas $3.6bn deal, starting point for Iran trade with Latin America

Tehran, IRNA – The Iranian deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy has described the Tehran-Caracas multiple agreements worth $3.6 billion as a starting point for a new development in bilateral economic and political ties between the Islamic Republic and the Latin American states.

Mehdi Safari made the description in a TV program over the phone on Tuesday while referring to the 19 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between Iran and Venezuela in Caracas in the presence of the presidents of the two countries.

Signing such agreements, most important of which are in the medical and engineering fields, is an indication of Iran’s serious determination to resume trade and economic cooperation with Latin America, Safari underlined.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Caracas two days ago to start his five-day trip to the three Latin American countries of Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba.

On Monday afternoon, the senior officials of Iran and Venezuela signed 19 agreements on cooperation in various fields. And the signing ceremony was attended by the two countries' presidents.

Early on Wednesday, President Raisi arrived in Managua, Nicaragua, on the second leg of his Latin American visits.

The tour will take the president to Havana, Cuba, later.
