The SOP Executive Director, Khalid Mohamed SM Shandoor made a comprehensive evaluation about the programme s major progress over the past four years.
Shandoor said that the statistics provide us with measurable and accurate results which confirm the appeal of the School Olympic Programme for the schools population. But, the quantity is not the only criteria for the extent of the success of our event. In fact, we notice every year a better quality in the technical level of the athletes and their performances. The hope of finding first class athletes becomes correspondingly bigger however we know that this is a long-term process and that there is a quite important proportion of luck in discovering talents.
We should not forget that the Schools Olympic Programme is not only about results and elite performances. It is also about having as many students as possible practicing sports and acquiring life skills through a variety of activities affirming their personalities. HE Secretary-General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani made an inspection tour inside Aspire, where he attended part of the activities of the final day of the Schools Olympic Program (SOP). The Secretary General was accompanied by the Head of the Palestine Olympic Committee and Palestinian Football Federation Jibril Rajob, as well as a number of Qatari heads of sports federations and the officials of the Olympic Committee.
HE Sheikh Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani stressed that the SOP was a "giant project" and a pioneer experience in the region. He added that the idea was initiated by HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Sheikh Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said that the interaction of the students with the program was indicative of its success. Some 20,000 students participated in the program this year.
The Secretary-General said that the Olympic Committee will look to have all schools in Qatar participate in the sixth, upcoming, edition of the program. He added that the committee will evaluate the performance of the program in order to develop it further in the future. (QNA)
