TURKISH PRESIDENT ARRIVES IN SOUTH KOREA
ISTANBUL/SEOUL (A.A) - 14.06.2010 - Turkey's president arrived in South Korea early on Monday on a four-day formal visit.
Turkey's President Abdullah Gul, who is the first ever Turkish President visiting South Korea after 28 years, arrived in capital Seoul accompanied by Turkish State Minister Hayati Yazici, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, a group of deputies and businessmen as well as 6 Korean War veterans.
Holding a press conference at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport prior to his departure for Seoul, Gul said South Korea was Turkey's ally with which it had established strong ties despite a long distance.
Noting he would hold talks in this country as the formal guest of his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak, Gul said political and economic relations between the two countries, as well as latest regional and international matters would be assessed during his visit.
Pointing to the veterans accompanying him, Gul said, "This visit has a special meaning and significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Korean War during which thousands of soldiers of ours fought side by side under the roof of the UN".
"Thanks to those martyrs and these veterans we have such a strong friendship with South Korea," Gul also said.
Noting Turkey and South Korea's approach to bilateral, regional and international issues were similar, Gul said, "During this visit, we need to add a new momentum to the relations and cooperation between the two countries".
Pointing to the 3.5 billion USD trade volume between Turkey and South Korea, Gul said economic ties between the two countries should be improved in particular.
Gul also said that Turkish businessmen would get together with their South Korean counterparts as part of his visit, adding he believed such talks would have positive results.
The Turkish president stated that economy, trade, tourism, investments, energy, defense industry, ship construction, IT technologies and pharmaceutical industry were the main cooperation areas for Turkey and South Korea.
President Gul is expected to begin his formal talks in South Korea on Tuesday.
