TURKISH AMBASSADOR SAYS ISRAELI DEFENSE MINISTER'S REMARKS UNTRUE
WASHINGTON D.C. (A.A) - 06.07.2010 - The Turkish ambassador in the U.S. capital said on Monday that Israel's defense minister's recent remarks, in which he claimed that Turkish officials had displayed efforts to hold a meeting with him during his visit to USA, did not reflect reality.
Speaking to AA reporter, Turkish ambassador in Washington D.C. Namik Tan recalled Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak's recent statement which alleged that Turkish officials had displayed efforts to persuade Barak to hold talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Tan himself.
"This statement is totally untrue. I have never had such a demand from the Israeli minister," Tan said.
Noting that Barak had requested to meet with him, Tan said he had informed Ankara on the issue and accepted Barak's request upon the Turkish capital's positive reply.
Tan said a meeting had been scheduled accordingly, however, the Israeli minister had later cancelled the gathering due to his busy schedule.
Tan also said that Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu's meeting with Barak "had never been in question".
Delivering a speech at a commission meeting of the Israeli parliament on Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said, during his visit to USA, Turkish officials requested him to hold a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and ambassador Tan.
Barak said during his speech that he had turned down the request as he thought demands for an investigation and compensation concerning the raid on Gaza-bound aid ships might be brought up during such a meeting, adding he would not appreciate such a development.
