TURKEY EXPECTS CONTRIBUTIONS BY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY REGARDING NUCLEAR SWAP DEAL, ERDOGAN
BRASILIA (A.A) - 27.05.2010 - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that Turkey expected contributions by the international community regarding Iran's nuclear program.
Erdogan and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva held a press conference in Brasilia after holding tete-a-tete meeting and chairing meetings between delegations of the two countries.
The moment is not right to discuss sanctions against Iran, because a step has been taken, Erdogan said.
"We signed an important agreement regarding Iran's nuclear program in Tehran. Mr. Lula and I spoke with authorities from several countries by phone and I also sent letters to 26 countries," he said.
"We attach a great importance to support by the international community. It is of great importance for world peace. We don't want nuclear weapons to proliferate. We want to prevent it," Erdogan said.
Iranian government said they were making the investment only with peaceful purposes and it was confirmed with the final declaration, he said.
Erdogan said the nuclear swap deal was signed by foreign ministers of Turkey, Brazil and Iran, and an important process has begun. "We have taken this step for the world peace," he said.
Regarding Turkish-Brazilian relations, Erdogan said one year ago flights began from Turkey to Sao Paulo started and it created an important activity in the tourism sector. 55 thousand Brazilians visited Turkey and 15 thousand Turkish people visited Brazil after that, he said.
Trade volume between Turkey and Brazil amounted to 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008 and it decreased to 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2009 and this figure should be increased, he said.
Turkish and Brazilian authorities signed memorandums of understanding on prevention of double taxation, cooperation in customs, strategic action plan, and cooperation in the agriculture sector.
