OIC member countries’ foreign ministers urge to freeze Syria’s membership

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 25 / Trend, A.Taghiyeva / Foreign ministers of member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have condemned the Syrian shooting down of a Turkish military aircraft and urged members to freeze Damascus's membership, the organisation said in its press release. Syria's actions pose a threat to stability and security in the region, the Declaration of the OIC Foreign Ministers adopted following the Jeddah meeting on June 24 says. A Turkish air force F-4 jet departing on Friday from the Erhac airbase in the Province of Malatya disappeared from radar screens half an hour after take-off in airspace over the Mediterranean Sea areas of Hatay province's south-east border with Syria. Syria said it shot down the F4 jet because it was flying 'over Syrian territorial waters. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the F4 jet was shot down in international airspace and its wreckage fell into Syrian territorial waters. The meeting also discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the construction of an Israeli settlement in the occupied Palestinian territories was condemned. OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in his speech congratulated Mohammed Mursi on his election as Egyptian president and expressed his hope for the development of democracy and stability in the country.
