Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences: Earthquake risk may increase

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 22 / Trend, M. Aliyev / Over the next two years, the earthquake risk in the Caucasus may grow, Geology Institute Director Akif Alizadeh believes. A strong earthquake is not expected in Azerbaijan, but seismic activity is growing, Alizadeh said. Research conducted by the institute's specialists jointly with U.S. scientists showed that the deformation of the earth's crust has been observed in the Kur River lowlands, Alizadeh said on Friday at a press conference on the geodynamic situation in the Caucasus. He said increased crustal deformation energy is observed near Baku, which could lead to earthquakes in the coming years. At the same time, Alizadeh ruled out the possibility of strong earthquakes in Azerbaijan. Do you have any feedback? Contact our journalist at agency@trend.az
