WWF Calls On EU to Mount Pressure on Poland to Cut Emissions
Doha, December 3 (QNA) The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has urged the EU to mount pressure on Poland to mitigate the increased emissions issue(hot air), and to encourage Russia to commit to the same approach and maintain its Kyodo Protocol membership.
The Kyoto Protocol s second commitment period is the sole binding legal agreement in the world of climate change endangered due to the stances adopted by Russia and Poland, saw speakers from the WWF and other environmental organizations at the eighteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Europe is divided over the topic, since Poland persists with the hot air policy during the second commitment period, extending to after 2020, the WWF pointed out. In this context, Martin Kaiser from Greenpeace said that European ministers need to fight for the cancellation of the equivalent of 13 billion tons of CO2 and commit towards reaching the goal of decreasing fuel emissions by 30%, or they will endanger climate and the lives of millions of humans. He affirmed that not reaching a solution with Poland and Russia will only serve the interests of the fossil fuel industry and prevent major investments in renewable energies.
For her part, WWF Global Climate and Energy Initiative leader Samantha Smith indicated that countries participating at the Doha talks should acknowledge scientific evidence of the state of climate change. She called on EU, Russia and Ukrainian ministers to take necessary measures as soon as possible towards limiting emissions. (QNA)
