US announces USD 10 million bounty on LeT founder Hafiz Saeed

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) The US has announced a bounty of USD 10 million on outlawed Pakistan-based Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. This was stated by US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman while addressing a gathering at the American Centre here. She was replying to a question on what the US was doing to bring to justice those involved in terror attacks against India. India has welcomed the US announcement of the bounty of USD 10 million on Hafiz Saeed, saying it sends a strong signal to Lashker-e-Toiba and its patrons. "India welcomes US notification under the Rewards for Justice Programme. (It) sends a strong signal to LeT as also its members and patrons that the international community remains united in combating terrorism," MEA Official Spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said on Twitter today. Saeed, the founder of terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba, is on India's most wanted list. After the 2008 26/11 attacks that left 166 people dead, India asked Pakistan to hand him over. Sherman, who is now on a four day visit to India, Monday met Indian officials including Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai during which a host of key issues pertaining to Indo-US ties were discussed. They also discussed the agenda for the Indo-US Strategic Dialogue to be held in Washington DC in mid-June. Sherman is leaving for Patna today, the first visit by such a high-ranking US official to the eastern Indian state of Bihar of which Patna is the capital. PTI
