U.N. Human Rights Doha Center Holds Police Training

Doha, December 08 (QNA) - The Doha-based U.N. Human Rights Training Documentation Centre for South West Asia and the Arab Region, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior's Human Rights Department, holds an intensive training program for police departments and units on human rights principles and standards. The training, which starts tomorrow, Sunday and runs for five days, aims to build the capacity of law enforcement officials in the implementation of human rights in their daily work. The program covers several training areas such as moral and legal principles in police work, and relevant international standards and codes of conduct including means of handling specific groups like women, juveniles, refugees and non-nationals, in addition to the substantive aspects related to detention, investigation, arrest and mechanisms and principles of the use of force and firearms. Trained specialists from the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and trainers from the Middle East and North Africa participate in the training program. The U.N. Human Rights Centre in Doha, jointly with the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), will also organize an art exhibition that would embody freedom of expression. The two sides will invite Qatari and non-Qatari artists to participate with their work in the four-day exhibition that will mark the annual celebration of Human Rights Day on December 10. NHRC Chairman Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, and Director of the U.N. Human Rights Centre in Doha Dr. Obaid Ahmed al Obaid ,will open the exhibition, which is expected to receive visitors from non-governmental organizations(NGOs) , diplomats, in addition to the public and Qatari schools. This year's theme of Human Rights Day is "My Voice Counts." (QNA)
