Top UN official: Doha Conference Defying Climate Change

Doha, December 04 (QNA) - President of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic has asserted that the 18th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 18) currently held in Doha presents an opportunity to prevent climate challenges from spiralling out of control, calling on applying teamwork to ward suffering off from human societies. During his speech at the opening session of the COP 18 high-level meetings, Jeremic explained that the efforts applied in the past two decades towards climate change have been fruitful; including the Kyoto Protocol, Durban agreement and Green Fund, hoping for the success of the Doha talks for the well-being it entails for all humanity. The understanding of COP 18 challenges is on the agenda of the talks, he said, adding that climate change has become a national cause for all UN member states. The UN official revealed plans to conduct a high-level discussion over climate change at the 67th session of the General Assembly with the aim of raising political awareness and offering support, adopting major changes of the renewable energy concept and low-carbon energy systems. At the conclusion of his speech, Jeremic thanked the State of Qatar for hosting the 18th round of the Conference and its keenness on aligning the international community s efforts in face of climate change.
