Thai highway police to facilitate traffic during New Year

BANGKOK, December 29 (TNA) - Thai highway police have announced that they are now ready to facilitate traffic during people's New Year travelling nationwide, when drunk driving will also be strictly checked and cracked down. Police General Somyot Pumpanmuang, a Royal Thai Police advisor tasked with overseeing safe traffic during the New Year festival, and Highway Police Commander Police Major General Noraboon Nanna ensured the readiness at a press conference on Wednesday. The senior police officers also set a target to reduce road accidents on minor roads by at least five per cent during the New Year long-holiday-inter-provincial travelling by tourists and workers for visits to attractive sites and their hometowns. The senior police warned that part of the Asian Highway toward the Thai North is a most accident-prone location, particularly at Sappaya District of Chai Nai Province, where a flood-damaged bridge is being repaired and heavy traffic is, therefore, expected. According to the police, cold towels, drinking water, tea and coffee will also be offered to motorists, but those who are found drunk driving will have their cars and driving licenses seized and people who shoot their pistols into the sky will be arrested.
