Statistics Organ to Hold Workshop on Official Statistics of Climate Change

Doha, December 02 (QNA) - Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) will hold on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations 18th Conference on Climate Change (COP 18), currently under way in Doha, a workshop entitled 'Official Statistics for Better Information About Climate Change' A number of environmental experts from Qatar, Europe, Africa and South America will take part in the workshop to discuss the latest developments in the statistical measurement of the environment's various elements in many countries as well as to show the link between official statistics and the need for data related to climate change. The CSA workshop aim is to strengthen cooperation with bodies involved in environmental issues and develop and implement a framework for environmental statistics of the State of Qatar that takes into account the priorities of the environmental policy as defined by the National Development Strategy of the State of Qatar 2011 - 2016 and other national and international relevant demands. The work on the development of environmental statistics in Qatar comes within the framework of the implementation of the obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the review of the progress made in the implementation process through the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions. QSA began last May in cooperation with state bodies involved reviewing the current environmental statistics in order to improve their quality and to apply international standards related to the organization of information and statistical data.
