Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman : All Stadiums and Sports Facilities Are Environmentally Friendly by 2014

Doha, December 03 (QNA) - HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee(QOC), who is also member of the International Olympic Committee on Sports and Environment and Chairman of the GCC committee on Sport and Environment said that QOC chaired by HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani seeks that all the stadiums and sports facilities are to be environmentally friendly by 2014, and to achieve sustainability in all sport facilities used. HE Sheikh Saoud, in an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) today on the sidelines of the 18th United Nations on climate change currently in session in Doha that HH the Heir Apparent made a decision a year and half ago during the hosting of the Conference of sport and the environment, that all our facilities are to be environmentally friendly and achieve sustainability by end of 2014, and this is one of the things that we apply on the ground. ", he added "We in the Olympic Committee started in cooperation with the Gulf Organization for the development and Kahramaa, a project for water recycling so that all the water in all sports facilities are to be recycled and is now in operation." HE Sheikh Saoud revealed that a doping lab will be opened in Doha on December 10. HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, said that QOC in collaboration with the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA", are working on the optimization of energy, through several power generation projects through solar cells in order to ensure that energy is sustainable and does not affect the environment in the country. He stressed that the sport has made great contributions to the reduction of carbon emissions during the recent period, citing the Beijing 2008, which helped to reduce the number of car users and create many kinds of transportation in the densely populated capital city of Beijing. The Secretary-General of the Olympic Committee said that the Committee has many activities in the fight against climate change, pointing to start making field of " Olympic gardens " as well as " desert parks ", besides the application of sustainability green areas and increase tree planting to contribute to the protection of the environment. He pointed out that the QOC has many special events carried out in collaboration with the School Olympic Programme (SOP), and various sectors of society to raise awareness of rational use of water and electricity.(END)
