S. Korean Experts Visit Fukushima No. 1 N-Plant

Fukushima, Dec. 17 (Jiji Press)--A team of experts from South Korea visited Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s <9501> crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station in the northeastern Japan prefecture of Fukushima on Wednesday. The team is visiting Japan to examine the safety of Japanese fishery products, following leaks of radioactive water at the TEPCO plant, which was stricken by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The South Korean experts spent about three hours inspecting facilities at the plant, including the Advanced Liquid Processing System, or ALPS, for cleaning up contaminated water and shields designed to prevent radioactive water from making its way into the sea. They received explanations from TEPCO officials about measures to keep the nuclear crisis under control. The members asked questions about the types of radioactive materials contained in the leaked water and the results of radiation checks for seawater, according to the Japanese Fisheries Agency. Atsushi Suginaka, a Fisheries Agency official who accompanied the team, said that the team members seemed to understand the progress of the efforts to tackle the radioactive water. In September last year, South Korea banned imports of fishery products from Fukushima and seven other Japanese prefectures following the radioactive water leaks at the Fukushima No. 1 plant. END
