Qatar: UN Security Council Fails in resolving Syrian Crisis and Palestinian Cause
New York, October 16 (QNA) - Qatar has confirmed that the Palestinian cause is a central issue for Arabs and Muslims and warned that the solution to resolve it will not come by force or by imposing a fait accompli policy, considering that the ball is in Israel's court to take steps towards peace.
In his speech last night before the open debate of the Security Council on the Middle East situation, including the Palestine cause, HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad Al Thani stressed Qatar's wholehearted support and the sincere diplomatic efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis through a political, participatory and inclusive process that includes all spectrums of the Syrian people and ensures the rights of all, calling on the UN Security Council to take all possible ways and means guaranteed by the international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including the use of Chapter VII, to provide protection for the Syrian people, stressing in this regard the need to preserve the sovereignty, independence, national unity and territorial integrity of Syria.
HE the Permanent Representative said that the Security Council is one of the pillars of international peace and security, so the credibility of the Security Council is of utmost importance, noting that its role in the Palestinian cause is minor and does not meet the aspirations of the peoples of the earth.
The Palestinian cause is a central issue for Arabs and Muslims, and in fact it is the most important international political issue for the International Community, he said.
Despite the international consensus that resolving that issue will not come by force or by imposing a fait accompli policy, what we're missing is the political will towards a just and lasting solution, HE Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad Al Thani said, adding that no matter how many views on this issue, we find that the ball is in the court of the Israeli side to take steps toward peace.
He said that various Israeli policies on Jerusalem, the illegal settlement, the illegal apartheid wall, the prisoners issue or the use of force in every occasion indicate the lack of sincerity in the Israeli side, pointing out that the measures taken by the Israeli authorities to Judaize Jerusalem and obliterate Arab and Islamic identity of the holy city are null and void and have no legal effect, and that Jerusalem will remain Arabic Islamic and Christian city with its mosques and churches, adding that there is no Palestinian State without Jerusalem.
HE Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad Al Thani urged the UN Security Council to take real actions towards resolving the Palestinian issue by putting pressure on the Israeli government to initiate a genuine and practical measures toward negotiating on a peaceful, lasting, comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue under the umbrella of a Two-State Solution.
HE also stressed that the Security Council should adopt a resolution forcing Israel to leave the siege on Gaza, stop the settlements and get the peace process back on track.
HE called on the Security Council also to adopt a resolution setting up an international commission of inquiry to investigate all measures taken by Israel in Jerusalem.
He noted out that the solution to the crisis in the Middle East depends on Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territories and the occupied Syrian Golan as well as the Lebanese territories.
On the Syrian issue Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations HE Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad Al Thani said in his speech in the open debate of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle East that the Security Council has failed to put an end to the tragedy.
The Syrian regime has used all kinds of weapons to kill tens of thousands of its citizens, HE said, warning of the persistent reports from Syria of using internationally banned cluster bombs on the residential areas.
HE Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad Al Thani affirmed that the Syrian regime has failed to protect its people, as the UN council did.
The Syrian regime's insistence to suppress the Syrian people's revolution by force, murder and endless massacres would not work and will affect the security and peace in the region.
Regard to the humanitarian situation, HE said that the number of internally displaced people reached more than a million and the number of refugees in neighboring countries reached more than 250,000 million people, and this has led for calling to establish buffer zones and corridors to protect the Syrian people, or to send Arab and UN peacekeeping forces.
He also called on member States of the United Nations to provide all kinds of support for the Syrian people, urging the Security Council to take all ways and means guaranteed by the international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including the use of Chapter VII, to provide protection for the Syrian people.
Concluding, HE emphasized in his speech the State of Qatar's support to the Syrian crisis through a political, participatory and inclusive process, and its support as well to the mission of the Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the Arab League Lakhdar Brahimi. (QNA)
