Nearly 4 million Turkish women illiterate
ANKARA (A.A)- A report prepared by the Directorate General on the Status of Women revealed that there were nearly 4 million illiterate women in Turkey.
According to the national report, "the Situation of Women in Turkey", 2.5 million of illiterate women are above the 50 years of age while the remaining 220 thousand are aged between 6 and 24.
The report included the data collected by the Turkey's Statistical Authority, TurkStat, in 2009. Accordingly, there are 4,672,257 illiterate people in Turkey. 3,757,203 of those people are women.
According to the TurkStat data, there are 18.5 million people who attended only the primary school. 9,586,552 of them are female while the remaining 8,937,271 are male. As for high-school graduates, 4,376,541 of them are female and 6,200,688 are male.
Number of university graduates is calculated as 4,320,813. 1,786,379 of them are female and 2,534,434 are male.
The rate of primary school enrolment increased to 98.17 percent in the 2009-2010 education year from 84.7 percent in the 1997-1998 education year. The lowest rate of enrolment is observed in the southeastern provinces of Bitlis (84.27 percent), Van (84.57 percent) and Hakkari (85.05 percent). The highest enrolment rates are seen with 99.31 percent in Ankara, 99.18 percent in Izmir and 99.01 percent in Mersin.
The Directorate General on the Status of Women said in its report that the country's target was to reach a 100 percent enrollment rate till 2013.
Women account for 44 percent of 3,529,334 university students.
The rate of women among academicians in Turkey is 38.7 percent and it is higher than many countries. But men hold the higher positions in universities. Female rectors account for only 5.2 percent and female deans account for 15.3 percent.
Maternal mortality rate was calculated as 18.2 percent.
As for the working life, only 12.8 percent of every 100 women have their jobs while 51.1 percent work as workers and 34.8 percent are jobless.
Women's rate of participation in labor force dropped to 26 percent in 2009 from 34.1 percent in 1990. This rate is 22.3 percent in urban areas and 34.6 percent in rural areas.
Women's employment rate is 22.3 percent. 41.7 of them work in agricultural sector, 14.6 percent in industrial sector and 43.7 percent in services sector.
According to the report, there are only 27 female mayors among 2,948 mayors.
On the other hand, rate of women in specialist vocations is higher than many countries. Rate of female academicians stands at 41.5 percent.
Women account for only 7 percent among high-level bureaucrats while the remaining 93 percent is held by men.
There are only 11 ambassadress representing Turkey in the other countries. Turkey has 110 ambassadors abroad.
