Jamaican Minister Commends HH the Emir's Call to Tackle Climate Change Collectively

Doha, December 04 (QNA) - Jamaica's Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change Robert Pickersgill has commended HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's call to tackle climate change collectively and seriously through reaching practical and effective agreement. HH the Emir's call came in a speech delivered today before the opening session of the high-level meetings of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-18) 2012. Speaking to Qatar News Agency today on the sidelines of the Conference, Pickersgill said he was confident that the State of Qatar, the chairman of the Conference, will succeed in helping all States Parties to the UN Framework Convention to achieve positive results consistent with the objectives of the Conference, especially with regard to the extension of the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and financing for developing countries to enable them to face the risk of emissions and adapt to the devastating effects of climate change. On the high-level meetings, which continue tomorrow with the participation of over 80 ministers and delegations from 194 countries, he said that the participants will begin talks with aim to reach a modified document to launch the beginning of the second phase of the Kyoto Protocol, hoping to see a solution to most of the issues being discussed at the conference. On the prospects of joint cooperation between Qatar and Jamaica in the environmental field and in tackling climate change, the Minister said that his country is seeking to develop bilateral relations with Qatar to benefit from its expertise in sustainable and green development.
