Doha Climate Talks, a New "Chapter", Brazil s Chief Negotiator Says

Doha, November 28 (QNA) - The 18th conference of the Parties (COP18) in Doha is a new chapter for the future climate talks, Brazilian ambassador to climate negotiations in Doha, Andre Correa Do Lago said Wednesday. Speaking to Qatar news agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the COP18 currently held in Doha, he said, "I think this conference will be historic and will be remembered as the parties were able to fulfill 20 years of negotiations to open the door to a new one." He said civil society has been worried over the climate change perils that have been looming large and we are getting closer to a new phase of negotiations where we have to think of bolder ideas. "I’m sure that this conference will allow us to come to some resolutions that will lead us the next step to cut emissions," Andre Correa said. Talking of COP 18 organization, he said Qatar was the fitting venue to host the talks. "Qatar s organization of COP 18 is too good. I think nobody can organize COP well after this round," he pointed out. "Being an architecture critic I see the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) is certainly the most beautiful convention center," the Brazilian negotiator added. Brazilian ambassador to climate negotiations in Doha pointed out to the systematic record-lows of deforestation Brazil has reached, being the homeland of the Amazon the largest rainforest on earth. "Last year’s deforestation rate was the lowest ever," Andre Correa said. "Yesterday we announced that this year’s rate was even 27% lower compared to last year," he further said. In that vein, he pointed out that Brazil was able to reach this result receiving no external support. "This result was accomplished through implementation of intelligent yet affordable policies, "Andre Correa said. "This sets us as an example for developed countries to be self-dependent at their bids to cut emissions," he said. Meanwhile, he recommended civil societies to take the initiative to take actions without waiting for others to give a green light to move forward. (QNA)
