COP18 Launches 'Momentum for Change' Initiative
Doha, December 04 (QNA) - The climate change conference (COP18) on Tuesday launched the Momentum for Change initiative on the sidelines of the eighteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), currently being held at Qatar National Convention Center.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UNFCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres attended the launch of the initiative .
Addressing the audience, Figueres praised the documentary film that was showed during the opening session of the high-level meetings of the conference, which highlighted Qatari projects to improve the climate. "This film took us out of negotiations to live the reality as it is," Figueres said, adding that anyone can combat climate change through their position.
A documentary film calling for change was shown during the ceremony. It demonstrated experiences of associations in poor countries, which launched initiatives to decrease environmental pollution and harmful emissions.
The ceremony saw the honoring of countries that have made these initiatives in combating climate change, namely: Senegal, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Kenya, Peru, Uganda, Namibia and China.
UN Goodwill Ambassador for climate change in the Arab world and singer Ragheb Alama expressed his pride for the position and Ban's trust in him and his "modest contribution" in making world a better place. "I believe we need to cooperate in order to face difficulties that climate change put it in our way." (QNA)
