Bangladesh Urges All Parties to Sign Kyoto 2
Doha, December 03 (QNA) - Minister of Environment and Forests of Bangladesh, Dr. Hassan Mahmud has called on the countries that have not signed the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol to speed signing , " so that there will be a legal mechanism binding for all parties, whether listed in the Appendix (1 ), or countries that have not signed primarily to the Protocol. "
Speaking at a press conference held the Bangladesh delegation participating in the 18th United Nations Conference on climate change in Doha, the Minister expressed hope that solutions will be reached regarding the points of contention in the Doha negotiations, saying, "We are working with the team on the implementation of the long term agreement in the context of Durban negotiations, in order to work on the implementation of the decisions of these negotiations on the ground. "
He said that the signing of the second commitment period , and enforcing as of first of January 2013 is one of the main topics on the agenda of the Doha negotiations as it was one of the key issues on the agenda of the Kyoto Protocol 1997.
The Minister of Environment and Forests of Bangladesh said his country believes that the extension period for five years was appropriate, adding "but it is possible to negotiate with other countries and groups participating in the conference to further extend period for eight years, provided that there will be greater cooperation by the developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of greenhouse gases if they want the extension to eight years.
