Attorney General Calls for Enhancing Anti-Corruption Efforts Worldwide

Doha, December 08 (QNA) - HE the Attorney General Dr. Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri said Saturday that corruption was one of the biggest factors that harms any community not just locally, but on an international scale as well. The Attorney General released today a statement to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day, which falls tomorrow, Sunday December 9. The Attorney General pointed to a previous message of his on the importance of consolidating international efforts in facing the dangerous impacts of corruption, which he said surpassed the borders of any country to have a negative effect on the international economic and finance systems. The impacts were represented in diminishing the rule of law, democracy, human rights and undermining social justice, the Attorney General said in his statement. He added that as part of the country's commitment to the rule of law and combatting corruption, Qatar established the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre in cooperation with the United Nations. The Attorney General and the Secretary General of the United Nations inaugurated the center last December. The Attorney General noted in his statement that recovering looted assets was one of the key issues in the Arab world, particularly in the Arab Spring countries. He said that Qatar took the initiative to resolve the issue by establishing the Arab Forum on Asset Recovery. The Forum was formed with the cooperation of the World Bank, the Deauville Partnership, the Group of Eight (G8). The Attorney General added in his statement that he was honored to be appointed as UN Special Advocate for Stolen Asset Recovery. He said that his main objective was to help the countries in the region recover their stolen assets, pointing out that he was making relentless efforts to accomplish that objective and hoped that the countries reap the rewards of his efforts. He called on everyone to use the International Anti-Corruption Day as a motivation to enhance anti-corruption efforts across the globe. (QNA)
