Al Attiyah : Qatar Works Hard to Crystallize New Initiative on Syria
Doha, November 06 (QNA) - Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al-Attiyah has underlined that Qatar has been working hard to contact all Syrian parties Syrian to crystallize a new initiative for resolving the Syrian crisis, praising the support of the Arab League, the Friends of Syria and Turkey for their efforts for the success of this initiative.
Dr. Al-Attiyah was Speaking to Al Jazeera TV Channel tonight.
About compatibility on the formation of a Syrian Government in exile, HE Attiyah said " it is better to explain some features of this initiative so as not to jump to the formation of the government directly. He said the initiative consists of two main components including the Syrian National Council and the rest of opposition parties, which did not join the Syrian National Council. Dr. Al Attiyah said: It was agreed to hold a consultation session to explain the idea of the initiative which is about the formation of a national body .. this national body is a parliament in microcosm for all parties .. and then this body is to elect an interim government of technocrats or politicians who are able to manage the revolution. ", HE Dr. Al Attiyah noted.
Responding to a question on the key features of this new initiative, Al-Attiyah said that the initiative comes as a result of the pressure from the Syrian people, who are suffering and demanding joint efforts from all of us to help them overcome the crisis through which they are going.
He added there is also a pressure from the international community on different Syrian opposition factions to find out a formula under which they can cooperate with the international community to help the Syrians overcome this crisis.
"That is why this idea emerged," he said, adding that before this idea there was an initiative to form a body to oversee the transitional government, but unfortunately many obstacles began to surface and big question arises: who has the authority to create such a body?
"We involved various Syrian opposition factions untill we reached this perception in this initiative that was put forward and was discussed at the consultative meeting impartially. And I think it will succeed and there is a great chance to succeed if discussed impartially," he added
HE Dr Al-Attiyah said this initiative was reached after a discussion that involved most opposition factions who are now in Doha, adding that the Syrian National Council has a big role in helping to develop it.
He stressed that the time has come to find out a mechanism that can operate freely both inside Syria and at the international level to help the Syrian people. (END)
