zerbaijan, Baku, June 11 / Trend, A.Tagiyeva /
Iraq plans to export gas through the territory of Jordan and to this end the country plans to build a new pipeline, a source in the Iraqi government told Trend on Monday.
The parties also plan to build a new pipeline for the transportation of Iraqi oil to Jordan. As part of this cooperation, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Iraqi Oil Ministry and the Natural Resources Ministry of Jordan.
"Iraq will export natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and fuel oil to Jordan. Iraq will also refine oil at Jordanian refineries," the source said.
The source did not disclose the volume and dates of the beginning of the exports, stressing that the legal basis of cooperation will be laid by signing the memorandum, after which details will be discussed.
The source added that the parties are negotiating the joint development of hydrocarbon fields.
According to BP, Iraq's proven oil reserves amounted to 115 billion barrels as of early 2011. The country ranks third in OPEC after Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The major oil fields of Iraq are Rumaila, Zubair, Nahr Umr, Majnoon and West Qurna in the south of the country. About 80 per cent of oil extracted in Iraq, is exported.
According to BP, proven gas reserves in Iraq amounted to 3.17 trillion cubic meters in early 2011.
